Grosse Pointe Public Library

Mid-Century modern at its best. This existing circa 1953 Marcel Breuer library was bursting at the seams from the continued use and growth of the Grosse Pointe community. Our winning proposal restores this gem back to its rightful glory while adding an equal size addition. Only touching the existing library lightly allows us to create a signature Breuer design element between the new and old…a courtyard for reading or having a coffee in the sun. This Marcel Breuer icon will glow in the presence of Twenty-First Century modernism.

This proposed addition and renovation to the Riverside Public Library will serve to strengthen and reinvigorate the urban conditions at the city center through the use of four proposed climate specific elements; the Courtyard, Pergolas, Groves and Water. Incorporating these design elements will bring light, air and green space deep into the building’s core, create shaded transitions from the street, soften the edges and pay homage to the city’s citrus legacy and cool the air and provide soothing sounds. Beyond the virtues of each of these architectural elements they together create a cohesive sustainable whole.
